What's this now?
what's happening? where's this going?
Oh, hey, hi - glad you’re here. Got a few minutes? Perfect. Quick update, then I’ll explain what’s up.
I started this Substack 3 years ago with an inkling of an idea. Then learned I was battling breast cancer. Initially I planned to write my way through the experience, in real time, for general consumption. But…
That didn’t happen. I couldn’t even keep up with a site that only updated friends and family. I either said what I wanted to on the book of faces, or I didn’t have the energy to do it at all. Mostly not at all.
This last year brought lots of wonderful change for our family, including my ending active cancer treatment, and adopting a pair of cats. All the huzzahs!
Obviously, this last year or so brought a whole host of sorrow and whatthefuckery to everything else in the world. Honestly, I’ve struggled to find words. I know I’m not alone in a feeling of dumbfounded impotence.
My tolerance for sitting in the stew of my own silence has long since past.
Which brings us to the Path of Serendipity.
Who am I? My name is Sarah, but I am also known as Mom, and as often as not I use the moniker Serendipity on the internet. Fun fact: I’ve lived in New York City the majority of my life, mostly as an adult. It was here I met, married, and birthed a couple of beautiful babies (now teens) with a naturalized citizen. It was here I witnessed 9/11, survived cancer, a pandemic, and burying the bulk of my immediate family in national cemetaries.
I’ve been “writing on the internet” for decades*, a majority published soley on one social media site or another — sometimes as a job, sometimes under a thinly veiled pseudonym. Unfortunately I’ve failed to preserve most of those thoughts in any way to my own archives.
In an effort to remedy that, a year ago I uploaded as much as I could to this site. Partially to archive, and possibly to revisit. So if you’ve previously followed me somewhere else, this is where I ran away to, and where to find me these days.
TL;DR What will you find here? I’ll be serving up stories, mining my musings, and stumbling ever onwards -- in whatever words I can muster. Photos are probable. Questionable poetry may also make it in the mix. #sorrynotsorry
Topics? Varied. Random. My philosophy is plan ahead, but go with the flow, and always lead with kindness. Plus my favorite word is fuck. So there’s that.
My goal is to publish at least once a week. I hope you’ll meet me on the path. Pretty certain we will have plenty to chat about.
*The concept of anyone writing on the internet for decades still seems preposterous to me. Don’t call me a Boomer, I’m GenX and proud of it.
